Great piece Amy. For my better late than never comment ... might I be a trifle self-indulgent and suggest the following reference ... Anderson, Peter "The Politics of Space: from 'alternative' spaces to artist-run-initiatives" Art Monthly (Australia) NO.19 April 1989 pp. 25-27. Like you, when I wrote this piece I made use of the Australia Council's guide lines as a tool for examining the shape of the field. The piece was written in the context of the Brisbane scene of the 1980s, which included ARIs such as One Flat, A Room, That Space, John Mills National, The Observatory ... and vaious other related projects (including John Nixons Q Space activities, which took place at the same time as he was Director of the IMA and Art Projects during 1980 & 81). Importantly, unlike Sydney & Melbourne which saw the establishment of new CAS in the early 80s, Brisbane already had the IMA, which was established in 1975. As John Buckley points out (in the IMA's on-line 'history' pages), the IMA was, in part, founded on principles derived from the Canadian Artist-Run Centres model ... which makes the formal policy & funding division in Australia between CAS & ARI an interesting case.
